Heene Community Centre operates from a flint-faced, old church-school building in West Worthing, on the corner of Heene Road and Winchester Road.

In 1984, a group of retired residents created the Heene Community Association (HCA) with one key objective in mind; “to form a community centre for the welfare of local people”.

When, in 1986, junior school children were moved into the new premises of Heene First School in Cobden Road, the newly formed Association approached Worthing Borough Council and asked permission to use the old school building as their community centre. A short lease was granted and using a skeleton staff of volunteers, HCA began to provide meeting rooms to accommodate local people’s activities, such as, dances, bridge and social bowls.

The Association obtained charitable status and over many years of fund-raising by loyal members and an enthusiastic management committee, a large modern hall was added to the facilities followed by a brand new kitchen.  After many years of negotiation, in 2005 the Association was finally granted a 30 year lease from Worthing Borough Council.

At the Heart of the community since 1986

Today, the community centre is a buzzing community hub in the west end of Worthing. Joanna Barden is the Centre Manager and she has a small office team assisting her.

There are several rooms for hire for classes, courses, meetings, and all types of events, such as wedding receptions, children’s birthday parties, funeral wakes, special birthdays, baby showers, anniversary parties and concerts.

We do encourage everyone to become a member of the Centre

For only a small annual subscription, you can become a member of The Heene, with several different activities on offer, such as Monday Dance, Social Bowls, Art & Craft, Italian, Spanish and Card-making. This takes just a few minutes to sign up. The annual subscription is renewed at the start of January. Then, you pay a small session fee each time you attend a class. Thank you for supporting The Heene.
